Imagine this: If we all shift just 10% of our spending to locally owned businesses, on a yearly basis, $1.3 billion will stay in our Utah economy!* That number may seem astronomical, but it’s within our reach.

Shift Your Spending Week will launch on Black Friday, November 25th and will run through December 3rd. We have a lot in store for our 2016 Shift Your Spending Campaign! 
Here's how to make the most of this year's Shift Your Spending Week:

1) Enroll your business in the Shift Your Spending Week Campaign!

When you enroll, you'll receive our Shift Your Spending Week Kit, which includes 100 "Thank You for Buying Locally" gift tags, 50 "I Shifted My Spending" pledges badges, 2 Shift Your Spending posters, 2 Shift Your Spending register backs, a point of purchase display, and a Shift Your Spending E-Kit filled with images and materials to share on your business's social media platforms. Your business will also be listed on our website as a Shift Your Spending participant, and may be featured in our blog and social media posts leading up to and during Shift Your Spending Week. Sign up here to join in the campaign.

As well as the Shift Your Spending Week Kit, businesses can sign up for the Small Business Saturday Kit, which included Small Business Saturday passports, posters and an e-kit. 

2) Become Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion!

Small Business Saturday has emerged as it's own national holiday (in our minds at least) and is a crucial day for independent, locally owned businesses during the holiday season. 

Here is what happened collectively in 2015 in communities which engaged with the Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion program.

  • Consumers who learned about Small Business Saturday spent a total of $16.2 billion with independent merchants on Small Business Saturday
  • More than 95 million consumers shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday
  • More than 685,000 free online tools and materials were accessed by small business owners on shopsmall.com to help get the word out about Small Business Saturday.

As a Neighborhood Champion, you will receive Shop Small merchandise to distribute to your customers, and help get your community involved in Small Business Saturday. This is different than materials Local First Utah provides as part of our Shift Your Spending Week campaign. Neighborhood Champion kit includes 200 shopping totes, 100 stickers, 30 "town crowns," 30 pens, 20 buttons, 15 pennants and 5 pet bandanas. It's a lot of goodies! 

If your business becomes a Neighborhood Champion, please send an e-mail to as well. We'll work with you to develop outreach strategies and to find other businesses in your community to partner with in order to make the biggest Small Business Saturday splash possible! 

It's also a great idea to join the Small Business Saturday Coalition. Consider that hundreds of local mayors, members of Congress, and the Small Business Administration are in the process of adding their voices.  The Small Business Saturday Coalition will be posted on the ShopSmall website and circulated to the offices of elected officials.  

3) As a Citizen, Take the Shift Your Spending Week Pledge.

Commit to shifting at least 10% of your holiday shopping toward locals -- and show it offi! You can take the pledge at participating Shift Your Spending Week Business, or online. You can pick up a pledge button at participating Shift Your Spending Week businesses, and if you pledge online, you'll receive an "I Shift MY Spending" Facebook photo.
